BEIRUT, Lebanon, July 25 (UPI) -- There are no consequences for European aid to Lebanon or the peacekeeping mission there following the terrorist listing of Hezbollah, officials said Thursday.
The Council of the European Union announced the military wing of Hezbollah was formally added to the European list of terrorist organizations.
"The council also approved a declaration underlining that this decision does not prevent the continuation of dialogue with all political parties in Lebanon and does not affect the delivery of assistance to Lebanon," it said in a statement
Hezbollah holds political office in Lebanon. The Shiite Muslim movement said the EU decision was influenced by Israel.
Former Lebanese President Amine Gemayel, leader of the pro-Western Phalange party, met Thursday in Beirut with EU Ambassador to Lebanon Angelina Eichorst, who offered personal assurances of Lebanese assistance, Lebanon's official National News Agency said.
She said she would meet later with Hezbollah lawmakers to explain the EU decision.
Hezbollah's military role in the Syrian civil war sparked concern about Lebanon's national security. A U.N. resolution ending Hezbollah's war with Israel in 2006 calls on Hezbollah to disarm and join the political process.
U.N. special envoy to Lebanon Derek Plumbly told Gemayel the EU's decision on Hezbollah would not affect the mandate of the U.N. peacekeeping mission monitoring the southern Lebanese border.
