BANGUI, Central African Republic, July 10 (UPI) -- A U.N. peace envoy dispatched to the Central African Republic said he would reach out to regional neighbors to build a sustainable peace.
U.N. special envoy to CAR Babacar Gaye, who also heads the U.N. peacebuilding mission in CAR, arrived Tuesday in Bangui.
"I intend to meet in the coming days with political stakeholders, civil society and representatives the Central African Republic's partners," he said in a statement. "I also intend to make contact with the authorities of neighboring countries and religious and international partners."
The rebel Seleka movement toppled the government in March, forcing President Francois Bozize to flee to neighboring Cameroon. The rebel coalition is accused of committing crimes against humanity despite agreeing to a peace accord in January.
The International Committee of the Red Cross said looting was widespread across the country, warning the situation in CAR has been "largely neglected."
The ICRC in June said it was bracing for the worst because of the onset of the rainy season.
