LONDON, July 9 (UPI) -- The British military will oversee training for members of the Libyan armed forces at an army base near Cambridge, the British Foreign Secretary said.
British Prime Minister David Cameron said during the June summit for the Group of Eight more than 7,000 members of the Libyan military would get training from G8 nations. The Libyan government would cover the cost of the training missions.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Tuesday small groups of Libyan soldiers would be brought to an army base near Cambridge for basic training.
"The government firmly believes that a stable, open and democratic Libya contributing to wider regional stability and security is in the U.K.'s interest," he said in a statement.
NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in June a delegation arrived in Libya to provide advice on ensuring national security. He stressed it wasn't a training mission.
Libya has struggled to ensure national security in the wake of the NATO-led intervention in 2011.
The British government said an arms embargo remains in place for Libya.
The 10-week training courses are set to begin later this year.
