EU concerned about Yemen's progress

LUXEMBOURG, June 24 (UPI) -- The humanitarian situation and continued instability in southern Yemen complicate an otherwise relatively positive political outlook, the European Union said.

Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula called for more homegrown attacks on the United States in a 6-minute video posted online in early June. The al-Qaida franchise, which counts Yemen as its base of operations, has been linked to terrorist plots on the United States and Europe.

The Council of the European Union said Monday it welcomed Yemeni efforts to find peaceful solutions to ongoing national security challenges but expressed concern about attempts at political transition since President Ali Abdullah Saleh stepped down in 2012.

Saleh stepped down under pressure from uprisings associated with the wave of democratic movements that swept through the Middle East in 2012. The EU said it was "specifically considered" about ongoing pressure on Yemen's territorial integrity from southern secessionists.

The council added a high number of Yemenis could not find adequate food supplies and malnutrition is on the rise.

"The EU remains deeply concerned with the humanitarian situation in Yemen, which continues to worsen," it said Monday.
