Jordan burdened by Syria war, London says

LONDON, June 20 (UPI) -- The British government said Jordan is an ally that deserves protection from the consequences of the Syrian civil war.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague met in London with King Abdullah of Jordan to discuss humanitarian issues tied to the Syrian conflict.

The British government said last week it would invest $2.7 million with the Emirati government to support operations at a Jordanian refugee camp near the Syrian border.

Hague said he welcomed Jordan's commitment to assisting Syrian refugees with open arms and open borders.

"King Abdullah and I fully agree on the need to bring the appalling violence in Syria to an end, and to protect Jordan and Syria's other neighbors from the consequences of the crisis," he said in a statement published Thursday.

A U.N. report on the Syrian civil war said it was civilians, refugees and the displaced that were paying the consequences of the conflict. Hague said the British government plans to provide an additional $270 million in aid to help address the humanitarian crisis.

Hague said members of the international community meeting for the Group of Eight summit in Northern Ireland this week all recognized "the immense burden" the conflict placed on Syria's neighbors.
