KABUL, Afghanistan, June 12 (UPI) -- Tuesday's attack on the Supreme Court building in Kabul may constitute a war crime, the U.N. mission in Afghanistan said.
A suicide bomb attack left more than a dozen people dead and at least 40 others injured Tuesday outside the Kabul Supreme Court. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement emailed to CNN. He accused Afghan judges of siding with Western powers to the detriment of the Afghan people.
The U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan issued a statement Wednesday saying the deliberate targeting of civilians may constitute a war crime.
European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton issued a statement Wednesday through her spokesman's office condemning the attack.
"This is an attack on all Afghans who believe in justice and the rule of law," her statement read. "It is further evidence of the insurgents' disregard for Afghan lives and their callous targeting of civilians."
International forces are winding down their mission in Afghanistan as national forces take on more security responsibilities. ISAF commander Gen. Joseph Dunford said in a statement the attack on the Supreme Court was "reprehensible."
The U.N. Security Council passed a resolution hours after the Tuesday attack condemning the violence.
