BANGUI, Central African Republic, May 31 (UPI) -- The onset of the rainy season in the Central African Republic means the humanitarian situation will get worse because of lingering conflict, the ICRC said.
The U.N. Security Council issued a statement this week expressing concern that security in CAR was out of control. A focus on ensuring stability following a rebellion from the militant Seleka coalition meant a rise in activity from the Lord's Resistance Army, a rebel group accused of war crimes in the region.
The International Committee of the Red Cross said instability in CAR was compounded by the approach of the rainy season.
ICRC regional chief Georgios Georgantas said some families don't have access to basic food supplies because of the violence.
"We have to expect that their situation will be further complicated by the arrival of the rainy season, which will make it difficult to move about for the next four months," he said in a statement.
Ugandan authorities in May reinstated a rebel amnesty law for two years. It doesn't extend to top LRA commanders, including leader Joseph Kony, however.
Human rights groups said it would help ensure regional stability while keeping the pressure on LRA, the United Nations' humanitarian news agency IRIN reports.
