Uganda news editor cries foul over raid

KAMPALA, Uganda, May 21 (UPI) -- A police raid on a daily newspaper in Uganda is evidence of government-backed media harassment, the newspaper's managing editor said.

Two radio stations were closed Monday and police raided the offices of The Daily Monitor, the largest independent newspaper in Uganda.

Police spokeswoman Judith Nabakooba told Bloomberg News that authorities had a court order to search the newspaper's offices in Kampala for a letter by intelligence director Gen. David Sejusa. The letter was said to reveal a plot by assassinate opponents of Muhoozi Kaneirugaba, son of President Yoweri Museveni and potential successor.

Daily Monitor Managing Editor Don Wanyama told Bloomberg News the newspaper didn't have the letter.

"We published the information," he said. "This is media harassment."

The government denied that Museveni, in office since 1986, is grooming his son to be his successor. Museveni supporters accuse Sejusa, who left the country, of trying to build political support.

International election monitors said there was a level of fraud that marred Museveni's election victory in 2011. The president is elected to a five-year term.

Newspaper editors wrote online Monday that government intimidation didn't do much good in the digital era of journalism.
