Gadhafi's son appears in Libyan court

ZINTAN, Libya, May 2 (UPI) -- Saif al-Islam Gadhafi, son of the late leader, indicated he was in decent health when he made a brief court appearance Thursday in Zintan.

Former Libyan intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi was extradited from Mauritania to Libya in early September. He, along with Gadhafi's son, is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of committing crimes against humanity during last year's civil war. Libya claims jurisdiction in both cases.

Gadhafi appeared briefly in a Libyan courtroom Thursday, where he was appointed two Libyan lawyers. The charges stem from an incident last year involving an ICC lawyer.

Melinda Taylor, an ICC lawyer working on his behalf, was arrested by Libyan authorities in June and held for several weeks. She was suspected of passing sensitive documents to him from one of his supporters.

Prosecutors presented a pen that had a camera inside and a watch allegedly used during the suspected exchange last year, the BBC reports.

Gadhafi indicated to a BBC reporter that he was in decent health. John Jones, his British lawyer, told the BBC the detention center in Libya was the equivalent of Guantanamo Bay, the controversial U.S. detention facility in Cuba.
