Syrian man self-immolates in Beirut

BEIRUT, Lebanon, April 29 (UPI) -- Security sources in Lebanon reported that a Syrian set himself on fire in Beirut as Lebanese nationals marked a revolutionary anniversary.

A security source told The Daily Star newspaper in Lebanon that a 19-year-old man set himself on fire at a public square late Sunday. He reportedly suffered third-degree burns and was being treated at a Beirut hospital.

Saturday marked the eighth anniversary of Syrian forces leaving Lebanese territory after the Cedar Revolution.

The security situation in Lebanon has intensified as the Syrian civil war threatens to spill over the shared border. The Daily Star reports that a 13-year-old boy was killed in a shooting incident near the border while he was working for a documentary film crew.

Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam called on constituents to remain calm.

"Lebanon is passing through a delicate stage that requires everyone to be aware of their responsibility in warding off dangers, and refraining from (using) political rhetoric that provokes sectarianism," he was quoted as saying.

The Lebanese newspaper reports that several members of Hezbollah's armed faction have been killed in recent border fighting. The Shiite movement said it was helping border residents defend themselves against Syrian rebels.

Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdel-Karim Ali said Monday the clashes on his side of the border were attributable to "resisting terrorist forces."
