U.S. military officials meet Chinese president

BEIJING, April 23 (UPI) -- The United States and China should look at the long term when assessing their cooperative relationship, Chinese President Xi Jinping said Tuesday.

Xi met with U.S. Marine Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Tuesday in Beijing.

The Chinese president said both sides should deepen trust on the military level. He said long-term cooperation would enhance the level of trust and tolerance between the major powers, China's official Xinhua news agency reports.

The U.S. Defense Department said Dempsey and Chinese officials discussed ways to develop "rules of behavior" that would eliminate or reduce the potential for misunderstandings regarding military operations in the Asia-Pacific.

Xi said the Chinese government views military-to-military ties in high regard.

China is seen as key player in reducing tensions on the Korean Peninsula. North Korea's test in February of a nuclear device has rattled the U.S. and South Korean militaries.

The U.S. military has placed a greater emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region now that the Iraq war is over and the campaign in Afghanistan is winding down.
