Britain hosts European military drills

LONDON, April 11 (UPI) -- British forces are taking part in European military exercises so troops are ready to take on any challenge, British Defense Secretary Philip Hammond said.

Hammond deployed 5,250 British forces to join the estimated 13,000 soldiers in a biannual multilateral exercise meant to coordinate with counterparts from the NATO alliance.

The British-led drills, dubbed Joint Warrior, run from Monday to the end of April at locations across the United Kingdom.

"Exercises of this type ensure that our armed forces are prepared to meet any challenge," Hammond said.

The British Ministry of Defense added that it deployed the HMS Monmouth to take part in joint military maneuvers with naval forces from Kuwait.

British Prime Minister David Cameron touted the country's nuclear strength in an article published last week in The Daily Telegraph.

He said British forces needed a nuclear deterrence now as much as it did at the height of the Cold War. With North Korean aggression, continued defense was needed now more than ever.
