IAEA verifies no damage to Bushehr

VIENNA, April 10 (UPI) -- There's been no damage to the Bushehr nuclear facility in Iran following an earthquake there Tuesday, the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a magnitude-6.3 earthquake in Iran with an epicenter about 55 miles from the Bushehr nuclear plant in Iran. The IAEA said it received verification from the Iranian government the facility wasn't damaged and no radiation was released from the site following the quake.

"Based on this information, and the (agency's) analysis -- which considers the earthquake's magnitude and other seismic parameters, as well as its location -- the (IAEA) is not currently seeking additional information from Iran," the agency stated.

Iran in September started operations at the Bushehr nuclear plant with the help of Moscow. Russia, under an agreement with Iran, operates and supplies fuel for the plant.

Iran announced this week it was preparing for additional nuclear work following multiparty negotiations in Kazakhstan. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said his country is a nuclear power and that title wasn't up for debate by its adversaries.

Iran is suspected of pursuing the technology needed to manufacture a nuclear weapon, an allegation the government denies.

A 9-magnitude earthquake crippled Japan's nuclear power sector in 2011.
