JAKARTA, April 5 (UPI) -- Fighting at an Indonesian detention center that left foreign nationals dead was triggered by disputes over conflicts in Myanmar, a security official said.
Yusup Umardani, a security chief at an immigration center in Indonesia, said eight people died and 15 others were injured during fighting among asylum-seekers from Myanmar.
"The fighting was triggered by detainees' homeland conflict and the cause of the incident is still under investigation," he was quoted by China's official Xinhua news agency as saying.
The government in Myanmar imposed states of emergencies and curfews in following violence pitting Buddhists against Muslims. U.N. officials criticized the government for not taking a lessons-learned approach to security following similar violence last year in Rakhine state.
Xinhua said 13 soldiers from Myanmar were killed during fighting with unknown assailants near the western border with Thailand.
Myanmar's democratic reforms that began in 2010 have been overshadowed by religious and ethnic violence.
