Iran sets conditions for nuclear talks

TEHRAN, April 1 (UPI) -- Iran may postpone negotiations over its nuclear program if Western countries insist on "illogical demands," a senior Iranian lawmaker said.

Nuclear negotiations between Iran, the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany are scheduled for this month in Kazakhstan. Iran is suspected of pursuing technology needed to manufacture a nuclear weapon, an allegation Tehran denies.

Mohammad Hassan Asafari, a member of the Iranian foreign policy commission, said Iran was worried about its right to peaceful nuclear research.

"If the P5+1 insists on its illogical demands from Iran such as giving up our nuclear rights, we may revise our views and postpone negotiations," he was quoted by the semiofficial Fars News Agency as saying.

Iran has the right to some nuclear research as a party to the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The United States is party to the talks as a Security Council member. Last month, U.S. President Barack Obama said on the occasion of the Iranian New Year that Iran is called on to take "immediate and meaningful steps" to reduce nuclear concerns.

U.N. inspectors said Iran's nuclear program may have a military dimension.
