Kenya agress to partial vote recount

NAIROBI, Kenya, March 26 (UPI) -- A high court in Kenya said it sanctioned a recount for about two dozen polling stations in response to a challenge from a defeated presidential candidate.

Kenya Prime Minister Raila Odinga narrowly lost to Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta in a March 4 election. Kenyatta was declared the winner after taking a simple majority by about 4,100 votes.

The Supreme Court in Kenya called for a recount from 22 polling stations, which the BBC reports accounts for about 33,000 votes.

Election officials encountered problems with the initial vote count, though maintained there was no interference at the polls. Odinga said the result was manipulated in favor of Kenyatta.

Odinga made similar claims following 2007 elections. Political violence after that election left more than 1,000 people dead.

Kenyatta faces the International Criminal Court in July on charges of committing crimes against humanity during the post-election violence. He's said he expects the court to drop the case against him.

There were few reports of violence surrounding the March 4 election. International observers described this year's election as generally fair.
