Cairo hosts CENTCOM leaders

CAIRO, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Egyptian Defense Minister Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met in Cairo with a high-ranking delegation from U.S. Central Command.

"The meeting tackled a number of issues of common interest and ways of boosting cooperation in the military field," Egypt's State Information Service reports.

Sisi last week expressed concern that the state system could collapse given growing political tensions in the country.

Demonstrations turned violent recently as Egyptians marked the second anniversary of a revolution that ushered in democratic reforms. Monday marked two years since former President Hosni Mubarak resigned. Anti-governments protests were subdued compared to late January protests.

Victoria Nuland, a spokeswoman for the U.S. State Department, said Washington supported a "broad dialogue between Egypt's leaders and the various political stakeholders to work through the various issues of concern."

The U.S. Defense Department confirmed its support for the Egyptian military and its leaders. The administration of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has received international support despite growing frustrations at home.

Last week, four of 20 Lockheed Martin F-16 fighter jets arrived in Egypt under a $1.3 billion-a-year U.S. military aid program signed by Mubarak.
