LONDON, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- British Prime Minister David Cameron said Thursday he was committed to a deep relationship with China after the Communist Party in Beijing elected new leaders.
The Communist Party in Beijing elected Xi Jinping to succeed President Hu Jintao as the party secretary-general. Xi, along with Vice Premier Li Keqiang will lead a new Politburo Standing Committee, the party's highest authority tasked with leading China during the next decade.
Cameron, in a statement Thursday, extended best wishes to the new committee.
"I am committed to deepening our cooperation with China in the interests of shared prosperity and security and developing our shared understanding of each other's values," Cameron said. "The U.K. wants China to prosper and I believe we have much to offer to help it do so."
Xi, in statements published by China's official Xinhua news agency, said the Communist Party is dedicated to serving the Chinese people.
"Under the new conditions, our party faces many severe challenges, and there are also many pressing problems within the party that need to be resolved, particularly corruption (and) being divorced from the people," he said.
