TRIPOLI, Libya, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- The Libyan government is called on to ensure there is no amnesty or impunity for crimes committed by former regime officials, the chief ICC prosecutor said.
A new Libyan government was sworn in Thursday in Tripoli. Lawmakers backed a Cabinet presented by Prime Minister Ali Zidan that was billed as a unity government.
Fatou Bensouda, chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court, told the U.N. Security Council that Tripoli was advocating for its right to try former regime officials on war crimes charges in national courts.
"If ... the court rules that the case should be heard before the ICC, I will count on Libya's full support and cooperation to ensure that the ICC's proceedings are both successful and are seen to be successful by the Libyan public, the first and most important audience for any such proceedings at the ICC," she told the Security Council.
Former Libyan intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi was extradited from Mauritania to Libya in early September. He, along with Gadhafi's son Saif al-Islam Gadhafi, is wanted by the ICC on charges of committing crimes against humanity during last year's civil war.
Both men are in custody in Libya.
