UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- The Iranian government condemns any efforts to politicize the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency, an envoy told the United Nations.
The U.N. General Assembly adopted a consensus resolution reaffirming its strong support for the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog.
Thomas Mayr-Harting, the head of the European Union's delegation to the United Nations, said a multilateral approach was needed to ensure security against weapons of mass destruction. Regimes like Iran and North Korea, he said, posed proliferation concerns.
Mohammad Khazaee, the Iranian representative, said his government had an inalienable right to pursue a peaceful nuclear program. He rejected, in a statement, "any politically motivated attempts by any state to politicize the work of the IAEA."
The IAEA had said it was concerned there may be military aspects to Iran's nuclear program.
The North Korean government, meanwhile, said that Japan was a nuclear "threat to Asia." The Japanese delegation responded by saying its missile systems were for defensive purposes, noting its nuclear program was in line with IAEA protocols.
