Sudanese weapons depot destroyed

KHARTOUM, Sudan, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- A U.S. monitoring group said a Sudanese weapons factory near Khartoum was the target of an "effective surgical strike" by rockets or missiles.

The Satellite Sentinel Project examined satellite imagery that indicated an ammunition plant at the Yarmouk Base near Khartoum International Airport was the target of an airstrike. Witnesses on the ground told SSP they observed three fighter jets near the area before the blast.

"If the explosions resulted from a rocket or missile attack against material stored in the shipping containers, then it was an effective surgical strike that totally destroyed any container that may have remained and the adjacent 60-meter-long, shed-style building," the organization stated.

Sudanese Information Minister Ahmed Bilal Osman last week said four Israeli fighter jets bombed the factory, leaving two people dead, the BBC reports. SSR didn't speculate on the nationality of the jets reported by witnesses to the bombing.

"We think Israel did the bombing," the Sudanese minster said. "We reserve the right to react at a place and time we choose."

The BBC reports that Sudan was suspected of funneling weapons to insurgents in Gaza.

There was no comment from Israel to confirm or deny the allegations.
