Kremlin critic tries to clear name

MOSCOW, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- A Russian political activist, accused of plotting a coup, denied allegations he was planning violent actions against the government.

Russian authorities questioned activist Sergei Udaltsov in connection with a video allegedly showing him conspiring with Georgian leaders against the Kremlin.

An investigator said Udaltsov admitted to meeting with Georgian nationals early this year but said he was seeking financial support for his Left Front movement, state-run news agency RIA Novosti reports.

Udaltsov told the news agency he has nothing to hide.

"In some cases, we have sought funding for the Left Front from businessmen," he was quoted as saying. "But we have never discussed any kind of violent actions or received any instructions or funding of any kind from any foreign secret services."

The opposition leader, arrested on several occasions, said the video was a fake and part of the Kremlin's repressive tactics.

Vladimir Putin's election to a third non-consecutive term as president this year sparked widespread unrest in Russia. More than 600 people were arrested after demonstrators clashed with Moscow police during May 6 demonstrations.
