Reports of fights with student protesters

KHARTOUM, Sudan, July 17 (UPI) -- Sudanese security forces and police clashed with student protesters at the University of Khartoum, activists said Tuesday.

Activists told the independent Sudan Tribune on condition of anonymity that clashes broke out between Sudanese security forces and students Tuesday in Khartoum.

The university is closed for the term and in observance of the coming Muslim holy period of Ramadan.

Khartoum responded to earlier demonstrations with force, sparking criticism from the United States and other Western allies.

Protests erupted last month at Sudanese universities after the government announced austerity plans. Sudan's economy has suffered since a January decision by South Sudan to halt oil production in a reaction to political feuds.

The countries have teetered on the brink of war since last year's declaration of independence by the south. Delegates during the weekend met to discuss outstanding issues left over from a 2005 peace agreement that paved the way to South Sudan's independence.

An estimated 2,000 demonstrators were rounded up by security forces in Sudan since protests erupted in June, human rights groups state.
