NAIROBI, Kenya, July 6 (UPI) -- Kenyan terrorists are increasingly selecting "soft" targets instead of heavily guarded facilities.
While Kenyan security agents have been providing security to vital installations and places frequented by foreigners and tourists, terrorists are increasingly attacking churches, business premises with more than one door, small hotels and bars, bus stops and vehicles.
Behind the terrorist rationale is the consideration that such targets will increase casualties and intimidate the ordinary Kenyans, combined with the fact that increased security surveillance and vigilance in most buildings and other urban areas makes targeting them more difficult, the Star newspaper reported Thursday.
The shift in tactics was evident in the May 28 attack on Moi Avenue. The Assanands building on Moi Avenue housed more than 50 small businesses, had two exits and no security. Two men left a bag containing explosives, which detonated and injured more than 30 people.
Other attacks signifying the shift in terrorist tactics included the March 10 grenade attack on the Machakos Bus Station, which killed six people and the June 16 grenade attack in Uhuru Park, which killed six people and injured more than 30 others.
