MUMBAI, July 5 (UPI) -- India is investigating Zabihuddin Ansar's role in the Nov. 26, 2008, Mumbai terrorist attacks.

India's National Investigation Agency has taken handwriting samples of alleged handler Ansari, alias Abu Jundal. In June Ansari was deported from Saudi Arabia and is in New Delhi police custody.

The NIA reportedly wants to corroborate if Ansari's handwriting appears in the diary found on the MV Kuber, the Indian fishing trawler the terrorists hijacked to reach Mumbai, the Times of India reported Wednesday.

A source familiar with the NIA, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: "The NIA wants to verify if he was the one who detailed the routes the gunmen took from the city's shoreline to various targets. The diary also had the duties of each of the Pakistani terrorists, directions they had to take, what they were carrying, some numbers, codes and so on. It is not yet known who made the jottings in the diary. Initially, it was believed that it could be the handwriting of some Pakistani, but with the emerging news that Jundal was present in the control room in Karachi, from where the handlers guided the terrorists, the police are rethinking the handwriting angle."
