Egyptian cleric rails against SCAF

CAIRO, June 29 (UPI) -- Military generals in Egypt shouldn't continue to hold the reins of political power, an Islamic leader told protesters Friday.

Egyptians gathered Friday in Cairo's Tahrir Square on the eve of the inauguration ceremony for their first democratically elected president.

Islamic preacher Safwat Hegazy told the crowd following Friday prayers that the country can no longer be led by the Supreme Council of Armed Forces.

"The military council's decision to dissolve the Parliament should be withdrawn and the Parliament should continue as it was," he was quoted by Egyptian news service al-Ahram reports.

Before last weekend's runoff vote, military leaders made a series of legislative maneuvers diminishing the role of the president.

Mohammed Morsi, the candidate from the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, is to take the oath of office Saturday. He beat retired air force general and former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq in the vote last weekend.

Morsi's critics say the lack of a constitutionally defined presidency lessens his political influence. A constitutional panel this week met to consider what type of government a post-revolution Egypt would embrace.
