Expat vote shows mixed Egyptian field

CAIRO, May 18 (UPI) -- Preliminary results from expatriate voting for Egyptian presidential elections indicate a diverse field five days before national voting begins.

Egyptian expatriates cast votes this week for the 13 candidates competing in the first presidential election since a 2011 uprising unseated long-time President Hosni Mubarak.

Of the tallies reported by Egyptian news service al-Ahram, former Muslim Brotherhood leader Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh is leading among expatriate voters in five countries, including the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.

The Muslim Brotherhood last year stripped membership from Fotouh, saying his decision to run for president violated the group's decision to not field a candidate. The Islamist movement, organized politically under the Freedom and Justice Party, reversed course this year and nominated Mohamed Morsi as its candidate.

Morsi, former Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa and former opposition leader turned Dignity Party Chairman Hamdeen Sabahi are among the leaders in results from France, Sudan and Yemen.

Al-Ahram indicated its list wasn't complete. Some voting districts in the United States hadn't reported preliminary results, al-Ahram added.

Voting in Egypt takes place over two days starting Wednesday. The ruling military authority would hand power over to a civilian government later during the summer.
