AQAP infiltrates Yemeni capital

SANAA, Yemen, May 15 (UPI) -- A militant with al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula is believed to have entered the Yemeni capital to carry out a car bomb attack, the Interior Ministry said.

The Interior Ministry has ordered security forces in Sanaa to go on high alert after it learned an AQAP militant had entered the city in order to carry out a car bomb attack, the independent Yemen Post reports.

Drones allegedly operated by the United States are said to have killed seven militants fighting with AQAP in Yemen and eight civilians in southern Yemen, CNN international reports.

A fractured Yemeni political system complicates the security situation in the country.

AQAP, following the death of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in 2011, has emerged as a top terrorism concern for the United States. A multilateral intelligence operation uncovered an AQAP plot targeting the United States, it was revealed last week.

The would-be suicide bomber was set to fly through a Gulf country to connect to a U.S.-bound flight. AQAP militants in the past have said targeting of U.S. interests was in response to increased drone activity in Yemen.
