U.S. worried by violence in Bahrain

WASHINGTON, April 26 (UPI) -- The United States called on Bahrain to implement recommendations made by an inquiry into last year's predominately Shiite uprising.

Washington said it was concerned by reports that one protester was killed and four policemen were injured during violence earlier this week.

"We condemn the use of violence in all its forms -- whether against peaceful demonstrators or police and government institutions -- and urge all parties to reject such actions," U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said in a statement.

"Violent acts are counterproductive to efforts to rebuild trust and pursue meaningful reconciliation in Bahrain."

She said that while Washington was a steadfast ally of Manana, the government must fully implement the recommendations outlined last year by the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry.

Bahrain said it was reviewing the numerous recommendations made in the 513-page report.

At least 40 people died during the uprising and the commission found at least nine deaths were attributable to the country's Interior Ministry.

A vehicle from Formula 1 racing team Force India was hit with a gasoline bomb last week during anti-government protests. The 2011 race was canceled during anti-government unrest, though the weekend race went by with few reports of violence.
