Suu Kyi meets Myanmar's president

NAYPYITAW, Myanmar, April 11 (UPI) -- Myanmar's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi described her second meeting with country's president since her release from arrest in positive terms.

Myanmar earned tempered praise from the international community for taking a step toward democracy after years of military rule.

Suu Kyi, a former prisoner and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was set free following 2010 general elections and now holds a seat in the national Parliament.

Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy won 43 of the 44 seats it contested in April 1 elections. A 1990s victory for NLDP was never recognized by the ruling junta.

Suu Kyi met Wednesday with Myanmar's President Thein Sein, two weeks before the new Parliament has its first session. She described the encounter as "a good meeting," the BBC reports.

She had her first meeting with the president in August.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said last week that Washington was taking a series of steps to ease diplomatic pressure on Myanmar in response to democratic developments. Clinton said the moves include naming an envoy and loosening financial restrictions on the country.
