BEIRUT, Lebanon, April 9 (UPI) -- There are fears that the fighting in Syria could spill over to Lebanon, opposition leader and former President Amin Gemayel said.
A deadline for a cease-fire in Syria is approaching though Turkish daily newspaper Today's Zaman reports Syrian forces fired across the border at a refugee camp in Turkey, wounding three people.
The camp in the town of Kilis is occupied by thousands of people who fled violence in Syria. Former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has scheduled a visit to the region for this week.
Damascus had agreed to deadline of Tuesday to pull forces from the streets of Syria but violence has continued.
Gemayel, leader of the opposition Kataeb Party in Lebanon, said he feared the Syrian crisis could spill across the border.
"The circumstances that we live in make us recognize the critical situation (in Lebanon) and (so) we fear the transfer of internal rifts from Syria to Lebanon due to the split between supporters of the regime and those against it," he was quoted by Lebanese newspaper The Daily Star as saying.
Syria played a major role in Lebanon's internal affairs before the Cedar Revolution in 2005.
"We need to convince Syria and any (Syrian) regime that Lebanon has no desire to interfere in the internal affairs of Syria, so that Syria does not interfere in our own," said Gemayel.
