Syrian fighting nears Lebanese border

BEIRUT, Lebanon, March 27 (UPI) -- Gunfire along Syria's border with Lebanon may be tied to clashes on the Syrian side of the boundary, a security official said.

While Lebanese officials denied reports that Syrian military forces had crossed the border, security sources told Lebanon's newspaper The Daily Star heavy gunfire was reported near the Bekaa Valley.

Milad Rizq, a municipal official near the area, said gunfire was heard at a point where the Syrian-Lebanese border is poorly demarcated.

"There has not been an incursion into Lebanon until now but we can clearly hear clashes inside of Syria," he said.

The report comes amid statements that Damascus has accepted a six-point plan offered by joint U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.

Ahmad Fawzi, a spokesman for the former U.N. secretary-general, said the Syrian government has offered written acceptance of Annan's plan.

"Mr. Annan views this as an important initial step that could bring an end to the violence and the bloodshed, provide aid to the suffering, and create an environment conducive to a political dialogue that would fulfill the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people," he said.

Al-Jazeera reported that Annan, in China seeking Beijing's support for the peace plan, has asked Syrian President Bashar Assad to put the commitments "into immediate effect."
