Kenyan military officials working in support of an African Union force in Somalia said they were engaged with al-Shabaab fighters along the southern Somalia border during recent clashes.

Al-Shabaab, in a statement published by the BBC, said it "bears no responsibility whatsoever for the turbulence" in Nairobi. Somali correspondents working for the BBC said the militant group, allied with al-Qaida, is typically quick to take responsibility for successful attacks.

Al-Shabaab has control over parts of southern Somalia, though the group has lost ground during fighting this year.

World leaders expressed optimism that Somalia was turning the corner after years of civil war during a meeting regarding the war-torn country in February in London. There hasn't been a functioning central government in Somalia since the 1990s. The tenure of the interim authority in Mogadishu ends in August.
