NEW DELHI, March 7 (UPI) -- Indian authorities arrested a journalist in connection with a February attack on an Israeli diplomat, though his lawyer claims his client isn't a terrorist.
Syed Mohammed Kazmi was arrested Wednesday in connection with a February attack on Israeli officials. He's a journalist working for an Iranian media organization, though a police spokesman wouldn't outline the charges or the media outlet, The Economic Times of India reports.
Israeli officials blamed Iran and Lebanon's Shiite resistance movement Hezbollah for February attacks on embassy vehicles in India and Georgia. The Georgia attack was thwarted but the New Delhi attack left at least four people injured, including the wife an Israeli defense diplomat.
Vinod Aggarwal, a lawyer for Kazmi, said his 50-year-old client had links to Iranian figures because of his coverage of the Iran-Iraq war for Indian television in the 1980s.
"That is why he is in touch with a couple of (Iranian) people," he was quoted as saying. "That does not make him a terrorist."
The Press Trust of India cited unnamed sources who accused Kazmi of helping the bombers trail the movement of the Israeli officials in New Delhi.
An Indian trade delegation is scheduled for a four-day trip to Iran this weekend.
