First verdict at ICC expected March 14

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, March 1 (UPI) -- A verdict in the war crimes case for Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga is expected March 14, the International Criminal Court announced.

The ICC, in a statement, announced it would deliver its first verdict in two weeks in the case, The Prosecutor vs. Thomas Lubanga Dyilo.

"In accordance with the Rome Statute, in order to convict the accused, the chamber must be convinced of the guilt of the accused beyond reasonable doubt," the court said in a statement. "In the event of a conviction, the chamber will later consider the appropriate sentence to be imposed."

Lubanga is facing two counts of war crimes for conscripting child soldiers into military service and for using child soldiers in combat in 2002 and 2003. Specifically, the court said he's accused of war crimes for conscription children under the age of 15 to participate in "hostilities" in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He surrendered to the court and was transferred to The Hague in 2006. His trial started in 2009.
