BEIRUT, Lebanon, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- The departing prosecutor for the Special Tribunal for Lebanon met in Beirut with Lebanese leaders and legal representatives, the government said.
Tribunal prosecutor Daniel Bellemare met Wednesday with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and members of his Cabinet, Lebanese newspaper The Daily Star reports, citing government sources. Bellemare is on a farewell visit. He announced in December he was stepping down because of health issues.
The tribunal, in a statement, said 29 Lebanese lawyers paid a working visit to the international courts in The Hague this week.
"The lawyers will be briefed by senior officials at the STL as well as other tribunals based in The Hague," the tribunal said in a statement.
The tribunal is investigating the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Four members of the Shiite movement Hezbollah were named suspects by the tribunal last year. Tribunal judges had said they'd move forward with a trial regardless of whether the suspects were in custody.
Hezbollah says the tribunal has only circumstantial evidence to support its claims.
