Kuwait's emir won't dissolve Parliament

KUWAIT CITY, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- The emir of Kuwait said his opponents would have to wait for another round of elections amid calls for a sweeping government overhaul.

Anti-government protesters managed to storm the Kuwaiti Parliament during debates over whether to question the country's prime minister on corruption charges.

Opposition lawmakers accuse Prime Minister Nasser al-Mohammad al-Sabah of transferring money to accounts outside the country illegally.

A government spokesman said Emir Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah was outraged over the situation, describing the demonstrators as "irresponsible."

Sabah was quoted by gulfnews.com as saying his opponents would have to wait until the end of the current parliamentary term.

"I will not dissolve the Parliament or the government," he was quoted as saying.

Government critics want the prime minister dismissed on corruption charges. Prosecutors have opened an investigation into allegations that some lawmakers were bribed in exchange for supporting the current administration.

Kuwait last had elections in 2009. The emir has the power to dissolve Parliament and call for new elections.
