Hand over Saadi Gadhafi, Libya says

TRIPOLI, Libya, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- The interim government in Tripoli said Niger's decision to welcome one of Moammar Gadhafi's sons as a refugee was "unacceptable."

Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou said last week that his government would grant asylum to Saadi Gadhafi as a refugee because of humanitarian reasons.

Abdel Hafiz Ghoga, a deputy leader in the interim Transitional National Council was quoted by CNN as saying the position from Niger was unjustified.

"It is unacceptable that Niger would turn into a country that harbors criminals wanted by international justice," he said.

Interpol issued a Red Notice for Saadi Gadhafi because of "armed intimidation" when he served as the head of the Libyan Football Federation. His lawyer denied the charges.

Human Rights Watch last week expressed concern over the extradition of former Libyan Prime Minister al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi because of fears he would be tortured when he arrived home. The group adds that it believes Gadhafi was summarily executed by Libyan rebels last month.

Saif al-Islam Gahdafi, one of the former Libyan leaders surviving sons, remains on the loose.
