Ennahda wins additional seat in Tunisia

TUNIS, Tunisia, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- A Tunisian commission awarded the Islamic party Ennahda an addition seat in the 217-member national assembly following a review of election returns.

An administrative court ruled on 60 of the 104 appeals presented to the national election commission. One appeal was accepted, making it possible for Ennahda to win another seat in the constituent assembly, the official Tunisia News Agency reports.

The court turned down dozens of appeals on procedural grounds and expects to rule on the remaining cases Tuesday.

Ennahda took the plurality of the vote in the late October vote for a constitutional assembly in Tunisia. Party leaders said it was tolerant of other groups and embraced the rights of women.

The party is tasked with leading a new assembly in drafting a post-revolution constitution.

Police used tear gas to disperse hundreds of people in Sidi Bouzid following the announcement of the election results. Many were supporters of the Popular List, whose seats were canceled for what the election commission said were financial irregularities.

Sidi Bouzid was the site of a December protest suicide that sparked the country's Jasmine Revolution, which led to the ouster of President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali after roughly two decades in office.

The Tunisian news agency notes a commission investigating the post-election unrest put the damage at more than $2.5 million.

Tunisia's revolution ushered in the so-called Arab Spring. The country's election was widely praised as fair by the international community.
