New military phase to Syrian unrest?

DAMASCUS, Syria, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- With international resolve waning, a Syrian opposition group used social networking to call for a no-fly zone as violence in the country continues.

The U.N. Security Council has been unable to pass a resolution condemning the bloodshed in Syria in large part because of veto threats from China and Russia. Both say they worry about a protracted international military conflict in Syria an suggest dialogue is the best way forward.

A delegation in Syria from the Arab League said it had frank discussions with Syrian President Bashar Assad but was unable to convince the regime to curb the violence.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights listed a 12-year-old boy as among the dead in Friday's violence. The group puts the death toll at 2,615 civilians and 827 from the Syrian armed forces.

Syrian Revolution 2011, a network of opposition activists, posted on its Facebook page a call for the international community to impose a no-fly zone over Syria.

The official Syrian Arab News Agency reports that authorities arrested 15 people in the restive city of Homs on weapons charges.

"An armed terrorist group attacked the external department of Homs police," the report added.
