Kenyans headed to The Hague

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, April 6 (UPI) -- Six political leaders in Kenya face a tribunal in The Hague for alleged crimes against humanity committed during a 2007 election, the international court said.

The International Criminal Court named six Kenyan political leaders who are to appear Thursday in The Hague, CNN reports.

ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo in December said the six Kenyans are accused of organizing a violent campaign that left more than 1,000 people dead after disputed elections in 2007.

Members of two major political parties -- the Party for National Unity and the Orange Democratic Party -- were among those named by the prosecutor.

Rivals in a peace deal that ended the political violence in Kenya agreed that perpetrators of violence could face justice in Kenya or at the ICC. Kenyan lawmakers passed a measure in December, however, to leave the ICC for what they said were issues related to sovereignty.

A disputed election in 2007 pitted supporters of incumbent President Mwai Kibaki against those of his main challenger, Raila Odinga. Odinga was named Kenya's prime minister in a power-sharing deal.
