HARARE, Zimbabwe, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- A tentative step toward elections in Zimbabwe could reignite hostilities between the country's rival leaders, a civil leader said Monday.
Robert Mugabe emerged as president of Zimbabwe with Morgan Tsvangirai taking over as prime minister in a 2008 power-sharing deal that ended a bloody political confrontation over the country's leadership.
Both leaders have suggested the country might have a general election in 2011. Philip Pasirayi, a spokesman for the civil action group Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition, told the United Nations' humanitarian news agency IRIN that another round of elections could spell trouble for the African nation.
He said he called African leaders "to impress upon them that Zimbabwe is not ready for elections until a lot of reforms have been put in place."
Zimbabwe officials with Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change said Zimbabwe needs to advance politically before it can consider another round of elections.
Mugabe warned authorities in January that he would use his powers to dissolve Parliament if parties don't reach a consensus on a new constitution.
