Otunbayeva calls for new government

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Interim Kyrgyz President Roza Otunbayeva called on a party supporting her leadership to move to form a coalition government, a lawmaker said.

Kyrgyzstan had general elections in October, roughly four months after clashes between members of the Kyrgyz and Uzbek ethnic communities gripped the south of the country. Supporters of Otunbayeva blamed backers of deposed leader Kurmanbek Bakiyev for stoking ethnic tensions

Tashpolot Baltabayev, the acting speaker of Parliament, said the Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan was called on by Otunbayeva to form a coalition government, the English-language Kyrgyz news agency 24 reports.

The party is led by a former prime minister and is considered close to Otunbayeva. It scored second in the October elections behind the pro-Bakiyev Ata-Jurt party.

Lawmakers were called to session Wednesday, marking the first time the post-coup Parliament had a session since the Oct. 10 vote. Few members of Ata-Jurt showed up for the swearing-in ceremony, however.

Election officials announced that five parties passed the 5 percent threshold needed to take part in the next government.

The international community called on authorities in Bishkek to form an inclusive government as soon as possible.
