MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- The Islamist Boko Haram sect in Nigeria is to blame for an attack in the north of the country that destroyed a police station, authorities said.
Nigerian security officials said a Molotov cocktail destroyed a police station in Maiduguri. A gunman with Boko Haram wounded a police officer before the explosion, the BBC reports.
Hundreds of suspected Boko Haram members escaped from a Nigerian prison last month after militants stormed a detention center in Maiduguri.
The latest attacks follow the assassination of an Islamic cleric who was speaking out against the ultra-conservative Islamist group, the BBC adds.
Clashes between local police and Boko Haram have left hundreds dead since 2009.
The attack comes ahead of presidential elections in January.
The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta claimed responsibility for an attack on Nigeria's Independence Day, blaming the government for not doing anything to address what it considers 50 years of failure.
Nine people were arrested in connection to the Oct. 1 blasts, including former MEND leader Henry Okah, who denied responsibility for the attack.
