U.N. scorns Abuja attacks

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- The perpetrators of the terrorist attacks in Nigeria last week must be brought to justice, the U.N. Security Council warned.

The militant group the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta claimed responsibility for attacks in Nigeria during celebrations marking the country's 50th anniversary of independence last week.

The blasts killed 12 people.

The U.N. Security Council in a statement condemned the attacks "in the strongest terms" and called on authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The statement urged "all states" to cooperate "actively with the Nigerian authorities in this regard."

Agents with the international police force Interpol raided the Johannesburg home of MEND leader Henry Okah last week at the request of Nigeria authorities. He denied he played a role in the anniversary attacks in statements to the BBC, however.

Interpol has a so-called Red Notice issued for Okah for crimes involving the use of weapons, explosives, fraud and terrorism.

MEND claimed responsibility for a series of attacks on the oil infrastructure in the Niger Delta. The group claims the government is not sharing oil revenues with native Nigerians.
