Don't politicize STL, Beirut warns

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Lebanese politicians must avoid using a tribunal probing the assassination of a former prime minister for political gain, top leaders in Beirut said.

Beirut is watching developments at the Special Tribunal for Lebanon after Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah announced in an Aug. 9 news conference that he had evidence to link Israel to the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Saad Hariri, the late leader's son and current Lebanese prime minister, was quoted in Lebanon's Daily Star newspaper as saying he wouldn't be dragged into a political dispute over the tribunal.

"For weeks, we have been stressing the need to commit to calm and to stop resorting to misinformation but unfortunately our calls were not heeded," he said.

Walid Jumblatt, the leader of the Progressive Socialist Party in Lebanon, met with Hariri to discuss political developments, echoing the prime minister's sentiments.

Rafik Hariri was killed in a massive bombing in downtown Beirut in 2005. Hezbollah and Syria are accused of playing a role in the assassination, something they both deny.

Nasrallah, according to the Lebanese news agency Naharnet, is to deliver a Ramadan speech highlighting the STL.

Prosecutors called on Hezbollah members to come forward with any evidence they may have on the Hariri plot.
