Islamic Jihad 'can deal' with aggression

GAZA, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- The armed wing of the Islamic Jihad in Palestine can deal with any Israeli aggression, the spokesman of the group said.

The official spokesman for the al-Quds Brigade, the armed faction of the Islamic Jihad in Palestine, told London's pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat that his group was bracing for a new Israeli conflict in Gaza.

He said Israel may press deep into Gaza during the controversy surrounding a May attack by Israeli forces on a humanitarian convoy trying to break through a naval blockade.

He maintained, however, that the various militant and resistance movements in Gaza were able to withstand the brunt of an Israeli raid.

"We currently can deal with any possible aggression in a different way and our performance will be a lot better than in the past," he said.

Egyptian officials last week accused Palestinians from Gaza of entering the Sinai and firing rockets at the southern Israeli town of Eilat and the Jordanian town of Aqaba.

The spokesman said, however, his armed faction was keen "to keep the conflict with our enemy going on in the heart of the land where (the enemy) exists and not shift the battle abroad."
