Pakistan complains about border security

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, July 12 (UPI) -- The Afghan government is called to action to prevent terrorists from streaming across the border into Pakistan, the Pakistani interior minister complained.

Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik said Kabul needed to do more to control the flow of insurgents across the border. He added that several militant groups were under the direction of third parties that were interested in destabilizing the region, the Associated Press of Pakistan reports.

Islamabad, during strategic talks with U.S. officials last week, said it needed enhanced aviation capabilities to help control the border and prevent drug trafficking as security agencies working at border checkpoints weren't enough to secure the region.

Pakistani officials during the talks said that without advancements in security, it couldn't contribute effectively to the broader war on terror.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has called for more intelligence sharing with U.S. forces in the region. He said better drone technology in the hands of Pakistanis would do more to allay national concerns over U.S. military activity.

The call for more security comes as Taliban insurgents ramp up attacks in Pakistan. A Taliban spokesman last weekend claimed responsibility for Friday attacks in Ghalanai that killed more than 100 people.
