ALEXANDRIA, Egypt, June 25 (UPI) -- Thousands of demonstrators in northern Egypt chanted "down with Mubarak" during protests Friday against the alleged police beating of an activist.
Witnesses told the BBC that more than 2,000 people took part in the demonstrations following Friday prayers in Alexandria.
The demonstrations were sparked by the death of Khaled Saeed, a 28-year-old allegedly killed by police in early June. The protests were led by Egyptian diplomat Mohammed ElBaradei, the former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency who returned to Cairo in February as an advocate of political change.
Authorities say the 28-year-old suffocated to death.
The protests followed a decision in Alexandria court against ElBaradei denying him power-of-attorney privileges, Egyptian daily newspaper al-Masry al-Youm reports.
ElBaradei is rumored to be positioning himself as a candidate for 2011 presidential elections, though he insists he is only an advocate for reform.
The BBC notes Friday marks the first time ElBaradei took part in opposition demonstrations in Egypt.
