UNITED NATIONS, June 22 (UPI) -- The perpetrators of an attack on U.N. peacekeepers in Sudan must be brought to justice swiftly, the U.N. Security Council said Tuesday.

More than 20 gunmen in Darfur opened fire on U.N. and African Union peacekeepers in West Darfur, killing three and injuring a fourth seriously.

The Rwanda peacekeepers fought the assailants in a gun battle that lasted more than an hour, the United Nations said.

The Mexican presidency of the U.N. Security Council issued a statement condemning the raid on the peacekeeping mission in Sudan.

"The members of the Security Council expressed their condolences to the families of those killed in the attacks as well as to the government of Rwanda," the statement read. "They encouraged the government of Sudan to ensure that all the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice and stressed that there must be an end to impunity for those that attack peacekeepers."

Since 2008, there were 27 soldiers with the African Union- U.N. Hybrid Operation in Darfur killed in Sudan.

More than 2.7 million Sudanese were displaced and as many as 300,000 civilians killed since fighting broke out in 2003 between Sudanese rebel and government forces backed by Janjaweed militiamen, the United Nations said.
